Green roofs growth substrate is a key component of a green roof system because it is the media in which plants roots live, providing nutrients and water as well as physical support to the whole plants.

In addition to ensuring the plants’ health, the choice of the correct substrate is of crucial importance to minimise the load on the building structure.

A lightweight soil mix of Laterlite Agri Expanded Clay and other components (peat, stabilized organic matter like compost, etc.) used as green roof a growing medium offers many advantages:

  • It improves the chemical and physical characteristics of the substrate by increasing water holding capacity and aeration whilst preventing water stagnation, which benefits plant health in all seasons
  • It reduces the risk of compactionin the substrate because of its dimensional stability, which also makes the substrate more durable
  • It reduces the need for maintenanceon flat, pitched, intensive or extensive green roofs and green walls.
  • It reduces loading on the structure of the buildingeven when saturated with water thus reducing green roof structural requirements

A lightweight green roof growing medium that incorporate expanded clay is compatible with all climates, temperature, and all plant types, e.g. sedum, grass, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, trees or horticultural plants (including urban vegetable gardens) either in intensive or extensive low maintenance green roofs.

The substrate can be prepared in situ by mixing 20% – 40% Laterlite Agri with the other components (in variable proportions depending on green roof type, vegetation, climate, etc) or can be supplied as a pre-mix ready for use.

Laterlite Green is a ready-to-use pre-mixed lightweight roof gardens and green roofs growth substrate, optimised to balance plant available water and nutrients and free drainage.

As required, it can be delivered in big bags or pumped from a tanker truck. For further information please contact technical support.
