Aquaponics is a cultivation system that synergically combines pisciculture, i.e. fish farming in tanks, with hydroculture, i.e. soilless cultivation of plants whose roots grow in a combination of water and other media.
Simply described, aquaponics uses the waste water from fish farming as the nutrient for hydroponic plant cultivation.
The waste from the fish provides an essential fertilising nutrient to the plants. The plants absorb the nutrient whilst cleaning and renewing the water, which is then returned to the fish tank.
Laterlite Agri Expanded Clay pebbles are an ideal grow media for hydroponic plant cultivation as part of an aquaponic system. Aquaponic systems with Laterlite Agri Expanded Clay are easy to use for cultivating various fruit or vegetable species and for breeding numerous species of fast-growing fish.
Using the same principles, expanded clay is used with success in phytopurification systems, such as constructed wetlands and hydroponics.
