For the cultivation of plants in pots, containers, or planters, the most important prerequisite is to create optimum conditions for the development of the plants and their root systems, and to maintain these conditions over time.
Laterlite Agri Expanded Clay can be used in various ways to ensure the health of plants in pots:
IN SUBSTRATE
Mixing 20% – 40% of Laterlite Agri with the other components of a growth substrate (e.g. peat or compost) improves its chemical and physical properties (moisture control, aeration, dimensional stability, lightness, durability, etc.).

AS A DRAINAGE AND MOISTURE RESERVE
When re-potting, a layer of Laterlite Agri placed below the compost at the bottom of the pot, planter, or container prevents damage from stagnating water whilst its high porosity and capillary power act as a valuable moisture reserve that favours rooting and plant health.
If planting directly into a trench in the ground, the same advantages can be obtained by spreading a layer of expanded clay along the bottom of the trench (to a suggested thickness of at least 10 cm). see also…
AS MULCH
Laterlite Agri Expanded Clay is frequently used as mulch for potted plants. When laid on top of the substrate it prevents weed growth, reduces moisture loss due to evaporation, minimises water stress and the need for irrigation in hot weather, protects the soil from extreme temperature changes, and provides an aesthetically pleasing finish.
