In restoration works to existing buildings, it is often necessary to intervene on vaulted slabs to:
In each of these cases the versatility of Laterlite or Laterlite Plus Expanded Clay, and of Latermix Cem Classic or Latermix Cem Maxi ultra-lightweight porous concretes, enables filling and compensating layers to easily adapt to the typically curved and irregular shapes of vaults and cupolas and are extremely lightweight even in large thicknesses (density 330 – 600 kg/m3). They will not attract damp to the existing structure.
Fills based on expanded clay optimise the distribution of the loading on the vault. They are strong, stable, durable, completely incombustible (Euroclass A1) cannot be attacked by parasites, and are suitable for incorporating service runs.
They make it possible to reinstate any type of vaulted support (brick, stone, concretes, etc.) by providing a new flat, dry supporting layer to take a screed or concrete slab.
Depending on the particular technical requirements, either Laterlite Expanded Clay or Laterlite Plus can be used dry (granule size 8-20 or 3-8), if necessary bound on its top surface with cement or lime slurry or, as an alternative, cement-based ultra-lightweight porous concrete (bagged premixed Latermix Cem Classic or Latermix Cem Mini) using the same construction method as for expanded clay.
Lime binder can also be used to make lightweight concrete (for further information please refer to the dosages developed in collaboration with CESA – Chaux Et Enduits De Saint Astier).
VAULTS ABOVE UNHEATED SPACES
In the case of vaults above unheated spaces (such as porches, cellars, etc.) the excellent insulating capabilities of expanded clay fill provide effective thermal insulation, noticeably improving thermal comfort in the rooms above and the energy efficiency of the building as a whole. The same considerations apply to vaulted slabs in roof spaces (for further information please refer to the section on insulation of roof spaces).
This type of construction is strongly recommended for works to historic buildings of architectural importance and for sustainable building (expanded clay is certified by ANAB ICEA).
HIGH-TEMPERATURE APPLICATIONS – REFRACTORY INSULATION
As well as its suitability for providing thermal insulation above vaults, Laterlite Expanded Clay is also frequently used above domestic, professional, or industrial bread and pizza ovens, where as a refractory material it performs extremely well even at high temperatures.
Because of its resistance to fire, Laterlite Expanded Clay is also commonly used to manufacture precast refractory components for ovens, chimneys, fireplaces, barbecues, etc. and as insulation for high-temperature pipework.
